Newborn Suffocated at Mother's Breast

On April 8th, in Changsha, Hunan province, Xiangzi was born. On the morning of his fourth day of life, while Xiangzi was feeding, his nostrils were covered by his 23-year-old mother’s breast. It took nearly an hour of emergency resuscitation before the child finally recovered a heartbeat, but the child remained in a comatose state. After consultations, the child’s chance for recovery was very small and he eventually succumbed. The parents of Xiangzi, then made the extraordinary hard decision to donate their boy's corneas. Inside the children’s hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit, workers for the eye bank successfully extracted Xiangzi’s corneas.
