Chinese Foot Binding

Foot binding was a custom practiced on young girls in China for about one thousand years from the 10th century and until the early 20th century. Beginning at an early age; young girls' feet were wrapped in tight bandages to prevent them from growing normally; their feet became deformed, never growing beyond 4-6 inches (10-15 cm). The four smaller toes on a girl's foot would break within a year of the initial binding; only the big toe remained intact. A well developed arch was the essential feature of a perfect "lotus foot". The ideal outcome was a 3-inch foot, called a golden lotus. A 4 inch (10 cm) foot, called a silver lotus, was considered acceptable.

A river runs red in China

Recent photos of China's Jian River capture a disturbing scene, showing what looks like a river of blood. The red water is the result of an illegal dye dump from a local chemical plant, the International Business Times reports. After being alerted to the "bloody" river, the Luoyang Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau investigated and immediately cut off the plant's power supply, the state-run Chinese news agency Xinhua reported, according to the International Business Time - LINK

The Girl Who Cries Blood

Twinkle Dwivedi (born 1996) is a girl from Lucknow India, who gained world attention for allegedly presenting a rare condition that causes her to spontaneously bleed from her eyes and other parts of her body without presenting any visible wounds. Several times a day, she bleeds through the pores on her skin, eyes, nose, hairline, neck and the soles of her feet.
The disease had a sudden onset in July 2007, when Dwivedi began bleeding through her mouth, and symptoms have continued to increase since that time. She has had several blood transfusions to replace the pints of blood she continues to lose. - LINK

Tissue Expansion

Tissue expansion is a technique used by plastic and restorative surgeons to cause the body to grow additional skin, bone or other tissues. Skin expansion is a common surgical procedure to grow extra skin through controlled mechanical overstretch. It creates skin that matches the color, texture, and thickness of the surrounding tissue, while minimizing scars and risk of rejection. When skin is stretched beyond its physiological limit mechanotransduction pathways are activated. This leads to cell growth as well as to the formation of new cells. In some cases, this may be accomplished by the implantation of inflatable balloons under the skin (see figure). By far the most common method, the surgeon inserts the inflatable expander beneath the skin and periodically, over weeks or months, injects a saline solution to slowly stretch the overlaying skin. The growth of tissue is permanent, but will retract to some degree when the expander is removed.
