Putrefaction

In the putrefaction stage, the gases being produced begin to build and will give the body a distended appearance. Because the body no longer has a defense system in place the bacteria grow and multiply by feeding off the body. Gases and fluids will eventually escape through the body's natural orifices, as the pressure builds.  As the gastrointestinal bacteria multiply discoloration patterns appear on the skin, often showing signs of marbling.  As the process advances a marked green discoloration in the abdomen becomes noticeable and eventually a darkening coloring of the skin overall .
