In the putrefaction stage, the gases being produced begin to build and will
give the body a distended appearance. Because the body no longer has a defense system in place the bacteria
grow and multiply by feeding off the body. Gases and fluids will eventually
escape through the body's natural orifices, as the pressure builds. As the
gastrointestinal bacteria multiply discoloration patterns appear on the skin, often showing signs of marbling. As the process advances a marked green discoloration in the abdomen becomes noticeable and eventually a darkening coloring of the skin overall .
