Honeybee Home Invasions

Bees choose their location and  build their nests for their convenience. Thus, nests are often high up or in a hard to reach place. They will usually choose a protected space, such as a hollow in a rock or tree, and inner construction is organized in a similar way to the artificial hive with parallel, vertically laid out sections of honeycomb. Cells are built with a plan in mind – from bottom to top, you will find cells that will house queen, drone, then worker brood cells. Storage of pollen and honey can be found above these. A honey bee colony can consist of between 40,000 to 80,000 bees.

  1. I love these photos, specially this one, as the absence of bees leaves us to contemplate the forms to its fullest: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-A_e72FLP1sI/UA7g23JLUsI/AAAAAAAAKKg/Og6MBuGQCSk/s1600/IMG_0095%5B1%5D.JPG
because it shows the perfect figures of nature, beautiful, yet so much natural perfection is also terrifying.

  2. we had them doing this in the side of my house were some bolts had been holding up a hose holder, someone had stolen the holder and the bolts and the bees moved in shortly after, we had to smoke them out and seal it.

  3. I love the intentional (seemingly) hives hanging from the ceiling. What a wonderful and creative idea.
