Bloodletting in India

Blood-letting is believed to be an ancient cure for a variety of ailments and still finds its daily application in the streets of Old Delhi. Tens of hundreds of patients with the ailment of arthritis, lumbago, back pain and even cancer come for the treatment at 'Rahat Open Air Surgery Clinic' just outside Jama Masjid in Old Delhi. The basis of the therapy is the belief that impure blood is the root cause of all ailments and if you purge them, you get well.

The practitioner simply using razor blades to cut on both the hands and legs to drain out the 'bad blood'. The process  involves making a few incisions on the veins of the hands or feet (after the affected limb is tourniqueted) of the patients and then sprinkling water on the wounds and applying herbal antiseptic powder.
