Facies Dolorosa; Das Schmerzensreiche Antlitz or Facing Pain is a fine art book by German physician Hans Killian. The photographs depict patients lying in bed - young,
old, male and female. They are usually shot from close-up, many of them showing a sick face in a hospital bed, with the patient's
prognosis printed beneath. Sometimes patients are shown more than
once, as his or her illness progresses. Sixty-four b/w reproductions of photographs divided into nine sections, text is in German. In Killian's accompanying
case histories he classifies the facial
appearances according to the associated mental processes. There were three editions of this book published - 1934, 1956, and 1967. The book is now quite rare and expensive when it can be found.
